The job application limit

If you arrived here from an application form, it was almost certainly a 2 MB cap on a CV photo, a certificate scan, or an identity document. These systems tend to apply the same limit to every upload regardless of what it is, and to report failure with a single unhelpful line.

Scans are worth a moment of thought. A photographed certificate is a photograph and compresses like one. A flatbed scan of a printed page is closer to a screenshot — mostly white, sharp black text — and will look better saved as PNG than as JPG, at a smaller file size too.

Why your phone photo is over 2MB at all

Because the camera is not trying to make a small file. It writes at a very high quality setting so that later editing has something to work with, and modern sensors produce 12 to 48 megapixels. The result is regularly 3 to 8 MB for a picture that would look identical at a quarter of that.

Bringing it under 2 MB does not require making it smaller on screen. Full resolution is kept; only the redundancy goes.

Several files at once

Drop the whole set in. Each file is measured against 2 MB separately, they are processed one after another so an old phone does not run out of memory, and the finished set downloads as a single ZIP. If a form wants them combined into one document instead, use images to PDF.

Landing just under, not far under

Ask most tools for 2 MB and they hand back something far smaller. That looks like success and is really waste — every unused kilobyte was quality given away for nothing. This searches for the highest quality that still fits. Measured across 28 runs — the seven size limits on this site against four different pictures — nothing came back over the limit, and the results filled 96% of the budget on average.
